PROTECTIVE PATENTS. LawDocs-Xpress Inc., a technology firm that provides legal secretarial services, has filed a pair of patents to protect the young company's processes and procedures.
LawDocs founders Catherine Massey and Sharon Quaintance started the company in early 2002 by spinning out the service from Massey's legal secretary service business. The pool of 50 or so secretaries who do the work - such as transcribing taped conversations or typing up legal briefs - have an average of seven years of experience with major law firms or corporations. Documents are proofed aid edited before being returned to clients, who pay by the quarter-hour for the service.
"Sometimes clients can't justify the cost of bringing in a legal secretary for a full day or half-day when all they need is somebody to type up a 30-page brief that takes two hours [to complete]," Quaintance said.
